The Captain and His Crew

AUTHOR: Kent F. Frates
PUBLISHER: Galleon Publications

COMMENTS AND REVIEWS: More noted for his books on Oklahoma's hiking trails, courthouses, and criminal cases, the multi-talented Kent Frates is also an amateur poet. With his book, The Captain and His Crew, Frates stretches beyond amateur poetry and into a published and beautifully illustrated poem book.

The book appears to be a labor of love, and purchasers of this publication jewel will be well rewarded with a collector's book of the first order. The copious illustrations in this work are of the usual excellence for now-deceased artist D. J. Lafon.

BOOK OVERVIEW: The Captain and His Crew is a collaboration between a professional artist, D. J. Lafon, and an award-winning non-fiction author and amateur poet, Kent F. Frates. The project was conceived by Frates some years ago when he wrote a pirate poem designed so that each stanza could be the subject of a separate illustration. Lafon was intrigued by this idea and created sketches that represent the ideas for the drawings seen in the book.

The project languished for some years while Frates worked his law practice and Lafon continued his busy career as an artist. Both Frates and Lafon rekindled their interest in the project in 1996 and their collaborative work was finally brought to fruition in this book, first published in 1997.
